Refrigeration - Hazelnuts can be sealed in plastic containers or bags, both in the nut shell or shelled. They can be stored from 32° to 35° for one year. After storage allow nuts to warm up without opening the container. Once reaching room temperature, the nuts can be used.
Freezer - Hazelnuts can also be stored at 27° or lower for two years in plastic bags or containers. After storage, allow nuts to warm up without opening the container.
Hazelnut Facts:
Corylus avellana - some people call it a Filbert and some a Hazelnut. Hazelnut is probably more correct because it is a member of the Hazel family and is derived from the Greek & Anglo-Saxon words for "helmet" or "bonnet". Filbert is probably from St. Philbert's feast day which occured in England during late August when the nuts were harvested
Hazelnuts are especially flavorful when roasted and used in desserts with berries and chocolate. They seem to have a special affinity for raspberries, but try pear, cherry and blackberry cobblers with a hazelnut cover.
